The subject is a real-life hawk named Cloudfeather who lost her ability to fly due to being shot in the wing. The artist has re-imagined her as being in flight, something that she would surely dream of doing once more. Thus, the title of the painting.

This original painting was painted by the artist over a period of four months using traditional painting methods. The painting features great attention to detail, and each and every feather on the subject seem to be lifelike and real. (see detail photographs) The blues used in the painting were ground by the artist with the traditional pigment lapis lazuli, sometimes called lazurite. Lazurite is a ground blue crystal that shines and refracts the light. This gives the colors a rich vibrancy that comes through in the finished work. This is the same pigment that would have been used by artists during the Dutch Golden Age of painting.
